Revolution 2020: Love , Corruption, ambition is authored by Chetan Bhagat, the rockstar of Indian Publishing and the most read author by Indian Youth. As with the couple of other novels I read by him, I felt he knows the nerve of Indian youth. I finished this in one 4 hours sitting and liked it. It’s one of those books which are not anything out of the world but still stir up so many emotions inside you!
I found this to be a complete package like Bollywood movies. Such books are a pleasure to read sometimes! It has a love triangle and a beautiful friendship penned into words. It depicts how hard is it for students to fit in the society if they fail at Entrance exams like JEE & AIEEE. With a backdrop of the holy city of Varanasi, Chetan Bhagat has tried to portray the venal side of Indian Politics. And most importantly, it highlights youth empowerment which is what a country like India needs today.
It’s about story of two boys, Gopal and Raghav and their female interest Aarti. Raghav cracks JEE and gets an engineering degree from BHU but wants to brings about a youth revolution and do something for society. On the contrary, Gopal is an academic failure, has always been poor but strikes gold when a MLA backs him to open his own Engineering College!! Gopal and Aarti are best of friends but Raghav is her love interest.
Ironically, this book again tries to prove the fact that a guy and girl can never be good friends and will eventually at some point become lovers! But, it is well justified , atleast in this book. Gopal’s passion about Aarti makes him get his love and then loose it again, for good. I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t read it by saying any more!
However bad people become or whatever wrong they do, there are lot of reasons which might be behind it. But eventually, we all are what we are. The goodness never dies . That’s what I felt about the character of Gopal. He did a few wrong things but he was an amazing person at heart! He lets his love go only because he knows he is not the best for her! I was a bit upset with the ending but I guess that’s the best possible. With it’s simple language and prevailing issues so easily noticeable around us, it will make you feel part of the story in some way lot of times. It’s fiction , yet so close to real life! I would say it’s a good quick read.
Some lines from the book which I liked:
“Sometimes life is not about what u want to do but what u ought to do”
“In relationship there are always two types of person: one weaker and the other stronger one. It’s never easier to live being as weaker one!”
“There are two ways of spreading light to be candle,or the mirror that reflects it.”
“Losers, even if they do not have a brain, have a heart.”
“How can God give girls so much power ? How can they turn productive, busy and ambitious men into a wilting mass of uselessness.
“That’s what human relationships are about – selective sharing and hiding of information to the point of crazy confusion.”
Telling your parents you’ve failed at something is harder than the actual failure.
It is amazing to be in love. A feeling even better than passion.
Girls can come up with the simplest of messages that have the most complex meanings.
Maybe that innocent, good part of us never dies – we just trample upon it for a while.
